Mah Jong Quest 3 Trivia:

“Mahjong” is 4-player game which origins are quite uncertain, there are several theories and myths around this fascinating game, one of them says that it was Confucius who created the game by the year 500 BC, others claim that Chinese soldiers developed it during the Taiping Rebellion about 1850.

What many historians believe is that “Mahjong” has its bases in Chinese cards game Ma Tiae from the Ming dynasty, this theory arises given the similarities among these two games.

Mahjong created such an enthusiasm that in 1937 even a National Mah Jongg League (NMJL) was created and this lead to the appearance of the first book of Mahjong rules.

Amazingly, “Mahjong” was banned in China, its country of origin, in 1949 by the Communist regime, this prohibition continued until 1985 when it was removed thus becoming on of the most popular pastimes.

The first time the game “mahjong” was mentioned in the western world was in 1895 in a paper by an American anthropologist named Stewart Culin.

The game arrived the United States during the 1920s rapidly becoming a success to the point that Mahjong nights included Chinese styling in clothes and homes decoration.

Nowadays, Mahjong turned to a culture in China including arts such as music with mahjong-themed Cantopop songs and in movies it developed as sub-genre, the mahjong movie.

A Mahjong therapy for cognitive memory difficulties and dementia has been developed in Hong Kong following the results of studies indicating that the game offers benefits to sufferers from such dysfunctions.
